Circular economy application in agri-food systems. Sustainable and innovative feeds from agricultural wastes for a resilient and high-quality aquaculture.
Period of Implementations Total budget
01/06/2022 - 31/05/2025 EUR 719.000,00
Our Mission
"From the field to the net"
Reuse of agricultural wastes to produce plant-based feeds for a sustainable aquaculture in the Mediterranean area
The pilot research project is tested in the Marche Region (Italy), and up-scaled in Algeria and Spain according to country characteristics and needs
Activity 1
Creation of innovative and plant-based feeds for aquaculture with low environmental impact through the partial/total replacement of animal protein and lipid components, with organic agricultural wastes (cereals, legumes, grape seeds), contributing to lessen CO2 emissions from the sector
Activity 2
Valorization of organic agricultural wastes and reduction of the costs of disposal , through the creation of sustainable and quality feeds, with at least 20% lower costs for farmers
Activity 3
Improvement of animal growth and welfare by strengthening the immune system of fish with the bioactive compounds contained in the new feeds, and consequent reduction in the use of antibiotics, thanks to the addition to feed of LABs and medicinal plants
Activity 4
Creation of a sustainable and economically favorable and competitive system in the Mediterranean area, that supports small-farmers in implementing organic productions, especially of pulses, which are a vegetable source of proteins and are soil nitrogen-fixing
